Hi there again,
I've just been thinking about what you are wanting to do.
You are "thinking of getting a Qube 3" and you mentioned in your post on Mon
19th
"My main use would be for fileserver/backup server"
I would like to think that a fileserver/backup server would be behind a
firewall, so what's wrong with using the original Qube 3 software load?
Reloaded on bigger drive(s)
Back to your original plan,
I've been looking for a page that showed step by step hardware upgrades on a
Qube 3 but I can't find it yet. It went into detail about HDD replacement
and the limitations etc..
This seems to be a very good starting point for OS Office for you

Ok, a Qube 3 is on the way.
I'm going to try StrongBolt or CentOS/BQ. Is there support for the buttons
and LCD readily other than through StrongBolt?
So, here is what I would like to try to do, comments welcome. I'm just
trying to get an idea of what is reasonable and what is not so I don't waste
too much time or get frustrated.
-- Install 2 120gig drives
hmm... I'm not sure what I have kicking around in the spare parts
bin, but matched drives are not likely to be there (although I'd likely use
RAID1, still....). I want capability for RAID; and I can get 120gig 2.5"
drives for pretty cheap on sale, barring a blowout sale of the last of 3.5"
inventory somewhere (I knew I should have bought some a few months ago).
The thought of laptop drives doesn't scare me (much) as long as the OS
supports atactl (and mount has appropriate parameters available as well) so
I can set them to power down with inactivity- I'm not convinced 2.5" drives
are meant to run
all the time as in a workstation. Does this seem possible?
I think 3.5" 120gig will be hard to find reasonably, given that 400gig
drives are the norm now (I assume 120gig is a limit based on my researching,
if that isn't right it will be good to know).
-- Pick StrongBolt, BQ, or Ubuntu--
- which seems to have most frequent updates/patches?
- any gotchas with yum or apt?
I have found a couple very big problems with NetBSD/ pkgsrc, but
if you know what to avoid it is very nice.
-- SMTP (hopefully postfix) / sftpd/ httpd / IMAP/ POP3 / samba / icecast /
tripwire / some molecular biology tools that run under un*x.
All would be fun; main reason for this is for sftpd and httpd.
There were some helpful post about ways to provide NAS earlier, what about
others above?
-- outgoing mail would have to relay through another account, since I'm in a
dynamic IP block. How readily is that set up/ is it directly supported by
the GUI if I choose BQ/ Strongbolt? I can get it going from Ubuntu with
Postfix, or depending on how working from the command line might break the
GUI, but if I'm going with a non- Ubuntu install the GUI might as well stay
working or there is no point to it.
-- Other common headaches? I'm not sure how many people have put BQ/
Strongbolt on the Qube 3, but it looks like there is active development to
get it documented and some recent success stories.
I'll be quiet from now on until I have hardware in hand and get
stuck- but thanks for thoughts-
Brian
