The more customizations you have made to the OS, the more potential problems 
may arise. When you update BlueQuartz from the tarball the upgrade will 
mostly revolve around updating RPMs related to the GUI interface. The only 
email related service that gets modified may be POP3/IMAP. If you're still 
running Qpopper and UW-Imap, these services will be replaced with Dovecot. 
That generally doesn't interfere with an installed MailScanner or 
SpamAssassin. 

Generally: If you have my AV-SPAM, then it's safe to update BlueQuartz 
manually from the tarball. It may break a few minor things here and there, 
but the AV-SPAM has means in place which detect such changes and will 
auto-repair them.

The changes you made to your Sendmail and/or DNS records to incorporate DNSBL 
and Domain Keys ... it would be sensible to back those changes up before you 
upgrade from the tarball. So in case they get tampered with, you can revert 
the changes back.
