I don't know about iptables thing, but regarding sendmail - what if you shut
down sendmail and start it over?:

#service sendmail stop
#ps aux | grep -I mail

If there are instances of sedmail running:
#killall sendmail
#ps aux | grep -I mail

If clean:
#service sendmail start

And check then maillog.
