Your missing the point, ssh is MUCH more secure than telnet.  If you use an 
untrusted internet connection (Internet café) they will be able to see your 
username and password in clear text and be able to log straight into your 
machine.  With SSH this is pretty much impossible (as long as you check 
fingerprints when you connect).

My boxing day analogy would be just because burglars always seem to try and get 
in via the windows doesn't mean that it's safe to leave the front door key under 
the mat :-)
