According to the OWM docs, the symlink option is there so that certain 
POP servers which automatically move messages from an incoming spool 
to the user's mbox file when POPping and leaving a copy on the server 
will continue to work properly regardless of the POP/webmail "first 
access" sequence.

Apparently qpopper does not need the symlink to work "correctly" (or 
should I say as expected), so removing the symlink works fine.

I just got off the phone with the client after testing this config 
when your email arrived, and it was the right solution in this case.
