I don't have spamassassin installed, so it's not this.  Load is always very
light when this happens.

I only have three sites, and two are almost unused, the other only lightly.
It runs a CMS system with PHP and MySQL.  The machine is a PIII-500Mhz dual
proc with 512MB RAM.  I don't understand it.  It should fly.
