No this server worked fine for months 

[root (at mark) server1 network-scripts]# grep 9.50 *
ifcfg-eth0:4:# 478.ipaddr = xxx.196.9.50
ifcfg-eth0:4:# 478.enabled = xxx.196.9.50
ifcfg-eth0:4:IPADDR=xxx.196.9.50

Do you by any chance have two aliases with the same IP in them? Try 
this to see what comes back:

   cd /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts
   grep ip.ad.re.ss *
