Good point, the access time did improve after I swapped out the network
cable<br>

It is odd. The load can get quite high during admserv usage, but falls
right back down again once you log out. I am discounting the router MTU
though, as 5 other Raq550 / Bluequartz platforms run off the switch as
well, with no issues.<br>

Have you traced your network?
For me, another reason for slowness was a bad cable or switch port (I don't
know till today...)
The Active Monitor sent me that "bad gateway" message only once and after 2
days.
It appears that ocasional packet loss didn't trigger it, since it checks are
every 15 minutes or so.
After I pressed on co-lo to change both cable and port, it's much better.
This doesn't have to be your case, though...
Btw, what 'top' and 'netstat -an' say?
