Have you traced your network?

For me, another reason for slowness was a bad cable or switch port (I don't
know till today...)

The Active Monitor sent me that "bad gateway" message only once and after 2
days.
It appears that ocasional packet loss didn't trigger it, since it checks are
every 15 minutes or so.

After I pressed on co-lo to change both cable and port, it's much better.

This doesn't have to be your case, though...

Btw, what 'top' and 'netstat -an' say?
