Have a look at /etc/mail/virtusertable.
Sometimes (don't ask me why), it goes corrupt and says something like this:
(one (1), long like like this)
^@^@^@^@^@^@ (etc)

Does it look like that? If not, try this, as root.
cd /etc/mail
makemap hash virtusertable.db < virtusertable

It might give you an error. Go to that line, remove it and try again.
