On my BQ boxes the correct file for grub is /boot/grub/grub.conf.

Depends if you use grub or lilo as boot loader. Normally the latest 
installed kernel should become default.

If you use grub, you can check /etc/grub.conf, if you use lilo 
/etc/lilo.conf

Changes to grub are effective immediately, changes to lilo need to write the

config into the bootsector using the lilo program
