Why not drop QPopper and install Courier-imap. I  replaced QPopper with Courier Imap in my CentOS + BlueQuartz installation and is working fine with a total userbase of 2000 and simultaneous hit rate of  about 100. The system is Xeon 2.4 GHz, 1 GB RAM and The load average is below 1. Sendmail is still there, but the modified procmailrc deliver mails to Maildir. No more mailbox corruption or overload with big mail boxes.
