In the mean time, I have tarred the following files from my Nuonce 2.5 ISO install which 
are working with the updated proftpd pkg from Karan's repo (proftpd-1.2.10-6.el4.kb). 
I've no idea whether these will work with the standard update people are getting (1.2.
10-10.2.el4.rf), so make the usual backups etc ;)

The above tar.gz contains the following files:

/etc/pam.d/ftp
/etc/proftpd.conf
/etc/xinetd.d/proftpd

Use at ure own risk, blah, blah. Iirc no restarting of services was needed for it to 
work, won't hurt though I suppose, may show any errors.
