If you just edit the lilo.conf or grub.conf and set it to use the smp 
version of the kernel, then that should work.

For example, if you use lilo then  the beginning of your lilo.conf would be 
something like


prompt
timeout=20
default=2.6.9-78.0.13.E
boot=/dev/md6
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
message=/boot/message
serial = 0,38400n8
linear


image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.9-78.0.13.ELsmp
        label=2.6.9-78.0.13.E
        initrd=/boot/initrd-2.6.9-78.0.13.ELsmp.img
        read-only
        root=/dev/md1





Then execute this command

lilo -v -v


Then if you have no errors it should reboot fine.
