Hey Dan,
No flames here! Actually, the frustrations that you are venting about
here are shared by a great many. But that's part of the reason that the
BlueOnyx project came about.

Well, yes and no. Most everybody seems to be using the CentOS /
BlueQuartz build that was released by the now gone Nuonce. Considering
that's dependent on CentOS 4, those days are numbered anyhow.
But stagnate is a perfect word in this case.

BX is simply picking up where BQ left off. It have easily been called
BlueQuartz 2009 or BlueQuartz 3.0 and not be all that different. But so
as not to step on any toes and so as to differentiate the releases, the
developers chose a new name.

This may be true. But there are, as I understand it, other issues as
well. In order to really move forward and not be stuck in CentOS 4,
PHP4, MySQL4 etc the project really had to be moved to CentOS 5. As has
been discussed here and on the BlueOnyx list, there's not really a good
way to update a live box based on BQ to BX (or whatever you would have
called the CentOS 5 variant).
So now the CentoOS 5 variant is simply released under a different name,
and the focus for a dynamic and up to date platform is paramount. Much
interest has been taken in ensuring that the platform not only carries
on the positives from the Cobalt DNA, but includes the features that
have truly become imperative.

Have you experimented with BlueOnyx yet? (Would you like to?) We're
migrating probably 3 or 4 customers per week. By all accounts, BX is a
real winner. If anybody's interested in trying it out without a big
investment, check out some of the offerings we are making on BlueOnyx
VPS or Dedicated on a month-to-month basis.
I should also add that, as a provider of dedicated servers and shared
web hosting, we have lost on some business due to our
adoption/commitment to BlueQuartz. In certain circles, the fact that
we offer BlueQuartz puts us in the same category of some of the little
providers that advertise they run on Cobalts or RaQ550's / RaQ4's.
Can't be taken very seriously.
I was extremely fortunate to be able to offer some of the things we have
come across as likes and dislikes about the platform over the years and
have those seriously considered in the development of BlueOnyx. Take,
for instance, the integration of subdomains, better MySQL management,
phpMyAdmin and webmail without having to purchase add-on packages. And
the more modern / up-to-date base packages allow for better 3rd party
additions.
