My experience is about the same.   Especially with MailScanner and 
SpamAssassin installed, that's a lot of work to be asking of the hardware.

An argument can be made for a Strongbolt system for a customer that 
really wants their own box, but wants to do it on a budget (all the way 
around - inexpensive to buy, inexpensive to run) if they want to host a 
few sites and do some email.

When you start loading one up with lots of traffic and especially add in 
the proc-intensive tasks, then a more robust hardware platform starts 
looking more attractive.
