Yeah, that's a nice way to take care of it. Many thanks for sharing!

Another option would be to integrate that code into /etc/init.d/mdchk, but 
personally I like your approach better.

Yeah, I'll submit it to SVN after testing it out. As for where it goes ... 
base-bluequartz is about right. Wouldn't make sense to put it into base-raid, 
as that is an optional module and there could theorethically be Grub systems 
around without base-raid being present.
