Here is the error I get when I attempt to restart proftpd:

[root@mail1 ~]# service proftpd restart
Shutting down proftpd:                                     [  OK  ]
Starting proftpd: mail1.xxxxxx.xxx - fatal: Socket operation on non-socket
mail1.xxxxxx.xxx - (Running from command line? Use `ServerType standalone'
in config file!)

Have you attempted to restart proftpd? /etc/init.d/proftpd stop then
/etc/init.d/proftpd start and see what happen.
