Yum recently updated proftpd from 1.2 to 1.3. (I added a new yum repository
to do a yum install of clamav) After the upgrade users could login to FTP
but they could not authenticate.

I uninstalled proftpd 1.3 and re-installed 1.2 from my nuonce install disk
(4.8).

After the re-install it appears the proftpd will not start. I get the
following error attempting to ftp from the server itself:

[root@mail1 ~]# ftp localhost

ftp: connect: Connection refused

ftp>

If I attempt to telnet to port 21 from the server I get the following:

[root@mail1 /]# telnet localhost 21

Trying 127.0.0.1...

telnet: connect to address 127.0.0.1: Connection refused

telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused

I have compared the proftpd.conf file from another working server and they
are the same.

Any help on getting ftp working again will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Al
