the auth system is part of dovecot and this limits the number of 
sessions/processes dovecot will open...  I'm sure the number can be higher 
but I have not had the chance to test the max setting...  I would have to 
use a customers server and most of the time it's a get it fixed right now 
and don't mess with it situation...  People get mad when the mail stops and 
I can't play games...  I'm expected to do instant repairs...  which I do 
very well these days....

I'll try to dos attack my devel server and find out more..  sounds fun 
anyway...
