In reply to myself: it works now.
And, I see it was in the testing repository anyway.
(Sometimes I see that I'm not as sharp as I think I am.)
So, I now temporarily enabled the testing repository by uncommenting it in
the
/etc/yum.repos.d/BlueQuartz-Base.repo
I did a
yum update dovecot
Then I tested it and it does work properly with and without ssl.
No problems.
The previous change I made in the dovecot.conf (as per Jeff's suggestion)
login_max_processes_count = 12
was still there.
dovecot --version
now shows
1.0.12
