Yes the CentOS rebuild is a easy free place to learn about basic building..
I would suggest you look into rpm queries and maybe building... the RPM
system is the structure everything is built on so it's really what you need
to learn to maintain RedHat/rpm based systems. There is another system I
like better then CentOS but I'm keeping that under my hat for now...
As far as the BQ stuff goes. Sure some things can break it but if your
doing things on an rpm basis then it's very easy to revert to the older
version as opposed to the old flawed ./configure, make make install system
that just plops files anywhere it feels like and thus makes it harder to
remove the bad files... Sometimes it can be almost impossible if this is
done multiple times.
I can't tell you how many times I've had to rebuild the Makefile or use
special flags like --mandir=/usr to get programs to install correctly. make
install is still used in rpm building.. but not always. Sometimes it's
just crap since programmers aren't always the best Makefile builders or for
that matter, at working on Redhat systems and every other system know to
man... So it's not really their fault... But I sure do yell at them even
if they don't hear it... :)
