Well, I used webmin and set up proftpd to start under the the boot and 
shutdown dialog. Seems now I can log in via ftp as anonymous, but not 
site3admin (PAM authentication failure). I'm making progress. I've found 
some proftpd.conf file configs that I may try out next.
