This is not strange at all.  It is in fact the normal and default behaviour.

If you have a site with three addresses "one", "two" & "three" as well as three 
hostnames "www.example.com", "example.com" & "mail.example.com" then instead of 
having nine separate entries in virtusertable you will have five...

 (at mark) example.com             %1 (at mark) www.example.com
 (at mark) mail.example.com        %1 (at mark) www.example.com
one (at mark) www.example.com      one
two (at mark) www.example.com      two
three (at mark) www.example.com    three


In this example www.example.com would be the name of the site and "example.com" 
/ "mail.example.com" would be email aliases in the GUI.

It could be you had "example.com" as the site and "www.example.com" is the alias 
beforehand!?
