I have the same problem with trying to use a pipe symbol in an e-mail address, 
again it's valid however the GUI doesn't like it :-/


I have just tried this and it seems to work fine :-)

Edit /etc/mail/virtusertable

Add a new line at the top of the file...
ekf/vkf (at mark) www.example.com        user
... "user" is the valid user that the address should be delivered to.

Restart sendmail with `/etc/rc.d/init.d/sendmail restart`

I hope that helps, I'll raise it as a bug I think :-p
