Hi Tom and all others,

CODB is quite a bottleneck and performance hog, as we all know. It gets even
worse when you try to update a few hundred fields of information in one go,
as I do with certain software. So any replacement that performs better is
certainly highly beneficial.

True that. :o)

Postfix has many advantages indeed and I think it would be highly beneficial
if we'd use it for BlueQuartz. The package base-email would need a general
overhault to accomodate the architectural differences and to make use of the
extra features that Postfix provides. But I don't see any unsurmountable
difficulties there.

As modular as CCE is, we could include provisions that support both Postfix
and Sendmail. At install time you'd have to choose between either the
traditional Sendmail or Postfix. It would also make upgrading existing
installs easier, as they'd remain with Sendmail by default, not breaking or
interrupting anything.

The tricky part would be converting a box with existing sites and users from
Sendmail to Postfix. That can be done and it could even be automated. But
it's perhaps not that trivial and will require lots of testing before
release.

So maybe we should pursue making base-email capable of dealing with both
Sendmail and Postfix to give people the ability to choose which MTA they'd
like to use on fresh installs. Conversion of existing installs from Sendmail
to Postfix can then be tackled sometime down the road.
