I've got a site that I've got a redirect working with an htaccess file 
if I type in the www. plus domain name for the url into a browser. 
However, if I just browse to the domain name without the www, it 
automatically redirects to a webmail.domainname address. It did this 
behavior for both I think before I installed the htaccess.

So, www.nomecity.org works,  nomecity.org does not.

I'm not sure how to proceed - or what question to ask of google - what 
keywords I might use. Help appreciated.
