I missed that important point... sorry.
In this case it would be an immediate change, provided the IP addess of the
old machine was changed to something else.
If you have both servers powered-up with the same IP address (this is
generally not a good thing to do), then you will get a response from
whichever answers first - usually this will be the one with the higher spec.
hardware.
If the old server has a different IP address than the new server, then I would
recommend that you check your routing?
e.g.
traceroute <ip address old-server>
and then
traceroute <ip address new-server>
The end of the logs should be different.
